A genus of gram-positive, non-motile, homofermentative, oxidase negative, rod-shaped bacteria occurring widely in nature. Its species previously were referred to as Lactobacillus casei group. The genus harbors several species that are used as starter cultures in dairy fermentations and as probiotics.
